We love State Parks. We especially love Arkansas State Parks-they are clean, maintained and beautiful. Don't get me wrong, I dream of blazing my own trail and long for the solitude provided on a quiet trail but sometimes you just need a tried and true path. Just like my moms cherry pie recipe, you just need to stay on the worn path by those who have gone before you because it's worth it and people like it.

We were short on time as we headed out this morning. Our adult children were home for the Thanksgiving holiday and we were working around their time constraints so we decided to go back to an oldie but goodie-Devil's Den.

The drive was less than forty-five minutes from our home in Elm Springs, Arkansas so we could get there before the trail got crowded. We had visited the park many times as our children were growing up and it was fun to reminisce about tent camping, hiking and the time we blew our young family budget on a cabin and it snowed. Memories scattered like the fallen leaves on the forest floor.

As we approached the overlook we considered what the scene would have been like just a few weeks ago. In our practice of being present, we decided it was a great opportunity just to be there-right then-with the people we loved. We had watched the gradual release of leaves over the previous two weeks on our day hikes but this was a special treat to be on the overlook now spotting green cedar trees soaking up the sun-giving us permission to love the previous season but also an appreciation of being in the moment.

All good things must end and we ended our hike greeted by families and trail runners filling the path-it was good to see younger families enjoying the park and building memories-enjoying their season of life.
